DIY Magnetic Pincushion
Because magnets are the best things to hold your pins, and collect them when they’re all over your sewing table/floor/couch.
You need:
- empty tin – doesn’t need to have a lid. Easiest if it doesn’t have too many corners – round is easiest
- fabric and trim to decorate it
- some nice strong magnets
- craft glue (I like Aleene’s)
- pins (eventually) > Note: some pins out there are not magnetic. Shun them like the weirdos they are!
Make it:
1. Measure the circumference and depth of the tin. Draw this rectangle on the wrong side of your fabric. The length = circumference plus one inch for overlap. The height = depth of tin or the part of it that you’re going to cover. If you want to cover the top as well, trace the top too. Cut these out. You may have to trim your top circle down about 1/8” so that it fits.
Cut any trim you’re going to add, also measuring out the circumference plus one inch.2. If you have a lid, remove it now. Smear a thin but thorough layer of glue over the outside of the tin. Line your circumference fabric up with the top edge to make sure you put it on straight. Start smoothing it down at one end, smoothing it out as you continue to lay it down carefully the rest of the way around. Apply glue to the overlap portion to adhere the end. Do the same with trim, and the top circle. Allow time for glue to dry.
3. Stick your magnets to the former bottom, now top, of your tin.
4. Get your pins out and go crazy!
