DIY – HOW TO CROCHET A 5-PETAL FLOWER
after failing dramatically when attempting to follow any of the billion “how to crochet a flower” tutorials that exist on the internet, i gave up and made up my own. i apologize in advance if i used the wrong terminology, i am not a pattern-following crocheter, i’m purely a “make it work” kind of girl… so i hope you can follow along : )
first, you should follow this tutorial to crochet a “magic circle” in order to begin. there are lots of videos on making the magic circle so just pick one that you like and get started – it’s incredibly useful! (i use it for these flowers, but also to make ears for other kinds of crocheted hats)
now you can begin with my steps.
MATERIALS: a ball of yarn, an appropriately sized crochet hook (depending on your yarn), scissors *in this tutorial i am using lion brand baby’s first yarn and a size K hook*
- once you’ve started your magic circle, single crochet 13 stitches around the circle (11 if you want a 4 petal flower)
- pull the non-working string to tighten the circle
- chain once into the first single crochet in your circle
- double crochet into the next single crochet in your circle 5 times!
- then, chain once into that same single crochet AND chain once into the next stitch
- double crochet 5 times into the next stitch and follow by chaining once into the same stitch and chaining once into the following stitch
- repeat step 6 three more times to complete the flower, then cut your working yarn and pull both strings through the center of the flower to the back and tie them off together
- now your flower is finished! you can leave it like this if you want!
- or you can attach a hand made pom pom by threading the strings through the flower’s center and tying them all together! (a pom pom tutorial will be
comingsoon! HERE!!!)
